Vision Brown Spots
Small brown spot on white of eyes?
On the white of my eye, there is a very small brown spot, barely larger than the size of a comma in this font. My mom has a brownish orange section on one of her irises (sectoral heterochromia from my best guess), and a similar brown spot on one of the whites of her eyes (like mine). Neither of us have any vision problems and have always had the spot. I’ve never seen anyone about it, but the school nurse has never said anything when she checked my vision (she may not have noticed it since it’s so small). I don’t believe anything was said to my mom when she had her eyes checked.
Is the brown spot on my eye somehow genetic and/or related to the brown on my mom’s iris? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.
just like you can have freckles on your skin, you can have freckles or nevi on your iris, your retina, and the “white of your eye” as well. Just like freckles and moles are monitored for size, shape, elevation, and color changes on the skin, the same characteristics are monitored for those on the eye too to rule out malignant nevi. Ocular nevi are very common and typically benign. If you start to notice changes as mentioned then definitely have it looked at by your optometrist or ophthalmologist. If you haven’t had it documented before during an eye exam (and a school nurse visit or pediatrician visit is NOT the same or even close to what constitutes an eye exam) it wouldn’t hurt to have one now with your optometrist so it can be documented and measured to monitor progression, if any, in future years. wouldn’t expect it to change though.
